Chapter Twenty-Seven
Thursday 18th May â Robyn Spence
Police HQ, Holton, Birmingham, UK
Robyn smoothed non-existent creases from the dark cotton jacket sheâd chosen for its professional yet flattering cut. She checked the time on her watch. Although two minutes early, she had a lot to cover and didnât mind appearing keen. With luck, David Jones would be impressed not only with her analysis of the results, but with the deductive leaps sheâd made, too.
Time would tell.
She leaned closer to the door and tried to hear what was going on inside, but a small group of uniformed officers passed behind her, chatting loudly. Their noise muffled the sounds coming from inside the briefing room. Her attempt to eavesdrop wasnât helped by the thickness of the office door, either.
She took a deep and settling breath.
Get on with it, Robyn. You can do this.
She rapped on the door and entered.
A sea of faces turned towards her. Most wore uniforms, but those in the front row seated around a table were in plainclothes. She allowed the door to swing closed behind her. It cut off the commotion in the corridor, and the room fell silent.
David Jones and Superintendent Havers, whom sheâd met briefly the previous day, stood in front of a large SmartScreen. The picture of the rod camera theyâd discovered in the fifth floor stairwell stood out larger than the others. Had David worked out the significance of the surveillance yet? Probably. What about all the other stuff? Sheâd surprise him with the links sheâd made, though. Of that she was certain.
Feet on the ground, Robyn. Donât get ahead of yourself.
âGood morning, Chief Inspector. Sorry if Iâm a little late.â
Thatâs it. Start with an apology. You idiot.
David threw her his cute, if slightly awkward smile, and closed the gap between them quickly. He had the crumpled, bachelor thing going for himâthe salt and pepper hair in need of a trim and a stubbled chin. But those pale, clear eyes seemed to stare right through her.
Oh dear me. Stop it, Robyn.
âNot at all, Dr Spence. Thanks so much for sparing us your valuable time. I realise how busy you are in the lab. We were going over what we have so far, which isnât a great deal.â
The quiet, welcoming voice eased her nerves.
Robyn shook his handâa dry, firm gripâand he showed her to an empty chair. She draped her jacket over the back, and made sure her blouse wasnât too open at the neck. New on today, it had taken her ages to decide on its suitability.
David faced the room.
âFor those who havenât met her yet, Dr Spence is the new team leader with the Racer-Colby lab. Sheâs recently joined us after a stellar thirteen-year stint with the Imperial Centre in London.â
Heâd read her CV?
Of course he had. Hardly a surprise since sheâd researched his background, too. For some reason, heat rushed from Robynâs throat to her neck. She prayed it didnât show as a blush.
Robyn cast a quick look around the front row. Searching for
